The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) carried out its first operation targeting bribery within the private sector, wielding the enhanced authority granted by the Anti-Corruption Act No. 09 of 2023.
This new legislation empowers the Bribery Commission to address corruption within the private sphere, extending beyond its previous jurisdiction limited to the public sector.
The first arrest was made on Friday (26), with the approval from the Commission resulting in the arrest of an accountant who is also the human resource manager from a private hotel.
The charges stem from an alleged solicitation of a sexual bribe from a female employee.
According to the complaint, the female employee was promised full payment of 75% of the current service fee, assurance of confirmed employment by higher officials in the future, and a commitment to ensuring her continued work without any complications. In exchange, the accountant and human resource manager allegedly lured her to a room in a private hotel in Habarana for sexual intercourse.
The arrested suspect is to appear before the Kekirawa Magistrate's Court.
