In response to a concerning spike in influenza-like illnesses, health experts are sounding the alarm and urging the public to remain vigilant for symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, and fatigue.

Consultant Virologist at the Medical Research Institute, Dr. Jude Jayamaha, spoke to the ZiraDaily, revealing, "There are usually two peaks of influenza, namely November to February and April to July." However, he added, "According to the samples obtained during the last month and the first week of January, we have seen a 25% influenza-positive rate, which is unprecedented."

In response to the escalating situation, the Secretary to the Health Ministry has advised the national influenza centre to intensify Influenza-like Illness Surveillance at 20 hospitals, including Colombo, Ragama, Kalubowila, Negombo Hospitals, Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, and the Infectious Disease Hospital.

"Samples are directed to the national influenza laboratory on a daily basis. As of now, the predominant type is influenza A," he stated.

Certain groups, such as pregnant mothers, children under two years old, individuals aged 60 and above, and those with chronic diseases, are particularly susceptible to influenza-like illnesses.

Simultaneously, health authorities are also intensifying COVID-19 surveillance. Dr. Jayamaha revealed, "Out of the 500 samples tested over a period of nine days, there is a six percent positive rate."

As a precautionary measure, Dr. Jayamaha advises individuals with a cough to wear masks to prevent the potential spread of respiratory illnesses to others.
