The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has issued an order related to a protest organized today (24) by Eranga Gunasekara, the national organizer of the Socialist Youth Union (SYU), and a group of demonstrators.
This order comes in response to a request from the Officer in Charge (OIC) of Welikada Police, who received information that the planned protest march intends to block the main entry road to Parliament from Polduwa Roundabout, extending along Parliament Road and obstructing access to the Parliament building.
In compliance with the court order, protesters are instructed not to block any roads, cause inconvenience to the general public and pedestrians, engage in violent behavior, or disrupt parliamentary privileges of public representatives. Furthermore, they are directed to conduct their demonstration in a manner that does not impede the duties of on-duty public officials or hinder any individuals.
The court emphasizes that if the protesters are unable to adhere to these guidelines, the demonstration should be promptly dispersed by the respondents. It is also explicitly stated that if the order is violated, the Sri Lanka Police are authorized to take immediate action to maintain peace.
