The 61-year-old senior oncologist Dr. Krishantha Perera, accused of assaulting a female junior staff member at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, has been granted bail by the Galle Magistrate's Court.
The decision, delivered on 22 January, includes the provision of two personal bonds amounting to Rs. 1 million each, as per the order issued by Magistrate Isuru Neththikumara.
The incident unfolded on 18 January when Dr. Perera was arrested in connection with an alleged assault on a female junior staff member. The altercation reportedly occurred during a heated argument between Dr. Perera and junior staffers, who were criticized for disrupting hospital services through a token strike the previous day.
The situation was brought under control by hospital authorities, but a female junior staff member later sought medical attention at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, claiming to be a victim of assault by the senior oncologist. Subsequently, Dr. Perera was arrested and remanded until 22 January.
In addition to Dr. Perera's bail, the court has ordered the continued remand of three minor staff members, including a female, who were arrested on 21 January in connection with Dr. Perera's complaint of assault. The trio is now set to be further remanded until 29 January, and an identification parade has been scheduled for that date.
