Dr. Krishantha Perera, the Senior Oncologist at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, who is accused of assaulting a female hospital staffer has opted for voluntary retirement following his recent remand over allegations of assault.

The 61-year-old specialist, who was arrested for allegedly assaulting a female junior staff member on January 17, has submitted his retirement letter to the Ministry of Health.

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) brought attention to the situation during a media briefing on Friday (Jan 19). They criticized the police for selectively responding to the junior staff member’s complaint, neglecting a previous one filed by the Oncologist. The GMOA emphasized that they will consider strict trade union action unless appropriate measures are taken both at the institutional level and by the police against the Oncology ward staff involved in the health strike and the alleged assault on Dr. Perera.

The incident reportedly unfolded after the oncologist engaged in a heated argument with a group of junior staff members regarding their token strike.
