The Sri Lanka Police has provided compensation of Rs. 1 million to the family of a lorry driver who lost his life in a shooting incident in Narammala.
Acting Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Thennakoon handed over the compensation at the residence of the deceased driver in Alawwa.
The incident occurred on Thursday night when a 41-year-old lorry driver became the victim of an accidental discharge from a sub-inspector's firearm.
A routine police operation turned tragic in Narammala as a small lorry, flagged down by two officers, defied orders to stop near the city. Pursuing the vehicle, a sub-inspector and a constable on a motorcycle intercepted the lorry near Dampalassa Junction in Narammala on Thursday night.
In the ensuing encounter, an accidental discharge from the sub-inspector's firearm resulted in the fatal shooting of Roshan Kumarathilaka, a 41-year-old father of three and resident of Maharachchiamulla, who worked as a carpenter.
The Narammala police promptly arrested both the sub-inspector and the constable involved in the incident. Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that both officers were suspended. The suspect sub-inspector was presented before the Narammala Magistrate's Court and subsequently remanded until January 23.
