Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa, engaged with a delegation of International Monetary Fund (IMF) officials during their current visit to Sri Lanka, emphasizing the need to amend the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) agreement signed between the IMF and the Sri Lankan government.
Premadasa, in discussions with the IMF team comprising Senior Mission Chief Peter Breuer, IMF Resident Representative Ms. Sarwat Javan, and local economist Manavee Abeywickrama, conveyed the adverse impact of the substantial tax burden imposed by the government on the Sri Lankan populace. He underscored the necessity for revisiting the EFF agreement and assured the visiting officials that a future government led by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) would pursue such amendments.
A statement from the Opposition Leader's office quoted Premadasa expressing concern for the people of Sri Lanka and their economic challenges, further stating the urgency of addressing the issues arising from the current EFF agreement.
Meanwhile, SJB Member of Parliament S.M. Marikar raised questions about the National People's Power (NPP) leaders' silence on the IMF meeting.
