Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa, engaged in a meeting with a delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during their official visit to Sri Lanka.
Led by Senior Mission Chief Peter Breuer, the meeting transpired at the Opposition Leader's Office.
Premadasa voiced strong accusations against the current government, asserting that it has significantly escalated taxes, including the Value-Added Tax (VAT), imposing a substantial burden on the general public.
He argued that these measures, purportedly aimed at fulfilling IMF program targets, have left segments of the population, such as pregnant women, children, middle-income individuals, and public sector employees, feeling 'helpless.'
In parallel discussions, the IMF delegation met with representatives of the National People’s Power (NPP) at the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) head office. Parliamentarian Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and MP Sunil Handunnetti, among others from the NPP, actively participated in the dialogue with the IMF representatives.
