Two individuals, purportedly en route to carry out an assassination targeting an individual involved in the fish trade in Ambalangoda, were arrested with a firearm and a motorcycle.
The Police Special Task Force (STF) effected the arrest as part of the ongoing 'Yukthiya' special police operation, the Ministry of Public Security said.
The alleged gunman is said to be an employee affiliated with the Army Headquarters, identified as a 38-year-old resident of Pannipitiya, who was on leave at the time of his arrest. The Ministry of Public Security disclosed this information.
The second suspect, a 28-year-old from Balapitiya, was also taken into custody. Investigating officers discovered that the motorcycle used for the intended crime bore a counterfeit vehicle registration plate.
Furthermore, it has been revealed that the mastermind behind the orchestrated crime is a notorious criminal figure known as "Loku Patty," who is presently in hiding overseas.
