A tense situation was reported after a 40-year-old man lost his life when police opened fire on a vehicle that proceeded to evade orders to stop for a security check.
The incident occurred late in the evening along the Giriulla Narammala Road.
Despite police instructions to stop, the driver reportedly ignored the order, prompting the police to open fire on the vehicle. The deceased was identified as a resident of Vathawakanda in Alawwa.
Kurunegala DIG Sujith Wedamulla assured that a special inquiry would be conducted to determine if the police officers fired at the vehicle after instructing the driver to stop. The police officer responsible for the gunfire has been arrested.
