Sri Lanka stands in solidarity with Palestine, emphasizing the rights of the Palestinian people to live in peace and dignity.
Minister Sabry underscored Sri Lanka's long-standing principled position on the matter, recognizing the legitimate and inalienable right of the Palestinian people to statehood. The commitment extends to supporting a just and comprehensive negotiated political settlement in line with relevant UN resolutions, ultimately leading to two States coexisting based on the 1967 borders.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Minister Sabry addressed the recent hundred days of massive escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip. Sri Lanka expressed deep concern over the unfolding tragedy, leading to an unprecedented level of civilian casualties and the displacement of over a million Palestinians. The minister lamented the heart-wrenching psychological trauma, particularly among children, and emphasized the worsening humanitarian situation due to shortages of medical supplies, food, water, and fuel.
Sri Lanka urged the international community to translate commitments into action, ensuring the implementation of relevant UN resolutions on the ground to restore the dignity and freedom of the Palestinian people. The country welcomed the 19th Summit of NAM's prioritization of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the broader issue of Palestine, along with the Political Declaration of the NAM Ministerial Committee on Palestine.
