The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Deputy General Manager, Eng. K.A. Noel Priyantha, disclosed that 50 wild elephants fell victim to electrocution over the past year due to illegal connections of CEB power lines to fences safeguarding farmlands.

The CEB spokesman, while issuing a media release, highlighted that a staggering total of 474 wild elephants lost their lives in the past year due to various human activities. Disturbed by this alarming statistic, the CEB has initiated legal action against those illicitly employing electricity to harm elephants.

In an effort to combat this issue, the CEB is calling for public support to protect the country's elephant population. To facilitate immediate reporting of incidents involving the connection of power lines to cultivation fences, the CEB has established an emergency number, 1987.

The board urges citizens to utilize this hotline to lodge complaints and contribute to safeguarding the majestic elephants from further harm.
