Former Parliamentarian Duminda Silva is currently undergoing medical treatment at the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital under tight prison security.
This development comes in the aftermath of the Supreme Court's decision to suspend the presidential pardon granted to him in 2022, the Prisons Department.
Prisons Spokesman Gamini B Dissanayake revealed that the Prisons Department has officially notified relevant authorities, including the court, about Duminda Silva's hospitalization. Despite the department's request to transfer him to the Prisons Hospital, the specialist doctor overseeing Duminda Silva's treatment at the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital has recommended that he continue receiving medical care there.
The Prisons Department reportedly lacks a specialist doctor to go beyond the recommendations provided by Duminda Silva's medical team. The situation arose after the Supreme Court's suspension of the presidential pardon, leading to Duminda Silva's arrest by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on June 1, 2022, while he was still undergoing treatment at the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital.
The Supreme Court yesterday held that former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s decision to grant a Presidential pardon to former Parliamentarian Duminda Silva is arbitrary and not valid in law.
