The wildlife conservators arrested a group of five individuals who had killed a young elephant calf that had strayed into cultivated land at Nekettegama in Galnewa. The suspects, residents of the area aged between 42 and 50, were taken into custody.
According to Megalewa Range Forest Conservator I. M. G. Seneviratne, the 42-year-old landowner used a 12-bore shotgun to shoot the approximately five-year-old calf.
Subsequently, he and the other four men buried the carcass in a concealed location. The suspects, now in custody, to be produced in court.
