LThe Western Province Southern District Crime Division reports the apprehension of a criminal with an island-wide record, involved in numerous thefts targeting money, gold, and other valuables within Colombo housing complexes by sneaking through alleys.
Following the suspect's statements, the police discovered a cache of stolen items, including 65 grams and 418 milligrams of melted gold, a gemstone, and 24 diamond stones.
The arrested individual faces five warrants from the Kollupitiya Police Station related to cases presented at the Colombo Fort Magistrate Court. Additionally, a warrant has been issued by the Kandy Magistrate’s Court.
Acting on information received by the police, the suspect was arrested near a Seeduwa hotel. During interrogation, he admitted to robbing a Mount Lavinia housing complex, stealing gold necklaces, rings, and gemstones valued at nearly Rs. two million. Other thefts included a Dehiwala housing complex where Rs. 12,000 worth of gold items were stolen, along with Rs. 12,000 from two houses and Rs. 4,000 through an ATM card stolen in Bambalapitiya.
Recovered stolen items were traced to Sea Street, Gothatuwa, and Borella areas, where the suspect had sold them.
- The suspect, often in the company of several women in Colombo, stays in multiple houses. After each theft, he heads to the village area in Embilipitiya, where he gives money to his sister, who, as he claims, secures his bail.
Having started his criminal activities at age 17 with the theft of a mobile phone in Kohuwala, the suspect, despite being caught by the police, continued his spree. Confessing to over fifty thefts, he reportedly used the proceeds from selling stolen property on women and drug use, including substances like Ice.
