The Government Nursing Officers' Association has initiated a widespread 24-hour token strike beginning at 7:00 a.m. today (Jan. 17).
The decision comes as a result of unsuccessful discussions with the Health Minister and the State Minister for Finance, according to Sudath Jayasiri, the national organizer of the association.
While several other health trade unions participated in a token strike on Tuesday (Jan. 16), they have temporarily suspended their trade union action as of 6:30 a.m. today.
However, Upul Rohana, the president of the Paramedical Services Front (PMSF), has expressed a commitment to resume the trade union action if the authorities do not address their concerns within a week. Rohana emphasized that approximately 100,000 health workers, including paramedical services, hospital secretaries, administrative officers, health administrative assistants, minor staff, and 75 other health staff unions, are prepared to join this island-wide strike.
