In a pointed critique of the government's decision to deploy a naval ship for the protection of international sea routes, Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith emphasized the need to address unresolved local affairs.
Speaking during a special service commemorating the second anniversary of the discovery of a grenade at All Saints' Church, Borella, Cardinal Ranjith lamented the authorities' neglect in finding the culprits behind various incidents.
The Cardinal expressed disappointment in the failure to identify those responsible for placing a grenade in the church, orchestrating the Easter Sunday attacks, and perpetrating harassment against the media.
He highlighted the absence of justice in these cases, pointing out unsolved mysteries like the Easter Sunday attacks, the disappearance of Prageeth Ekneligoda, and the killing of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickramatunga.
"It appears that resolving domestic issues is not receiving the attention it deserves, with authorities seemingly prioritizing the safeguarding of international seas," Cardinal Ranjith remarked. He urged a shift in focus, emphasizing the importance of addressing critical matters within the nation.
Acknowledging the upcoming 2024 elections, the Cardinal expressed hope that the electorate would entrust the nation to capable leaders, urging citizens to prioritize resolving internal challenges for a more stable future.
