Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs, and Constitutional Reforms, Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, has revealed plans to change the management of the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre, following a recent incident of unrest.
The Minister stressed the need for a new program at the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Center in response to reported conflicts among inmates. A scheduled discussion on Monday (Jan. 15) will delve into the details of future plans concerning the management transition.
The recent clash at the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre resulted in over 60 inmates escaping, with at least 25 others sustaining injuries. Those injured are currently undergoing treatment at Welikanda Hospital, and three in critical condition have been transferred to the Polonnaruwa Teaching Hospital.
Notably, 16 of the escaped detainees voluntarily surrendered to the police with the assistance of local residents. Some of these surrendering inmates alleged repeated harassment by fellow detainees at the center.
