In response to escalating concerns raised by various organizations, including the lawyers' association and the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission, the National Police Commission has issued a comprehensive set of guidelines to Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Thennakoon in relation to the ongoing nationwide "Yukthiya" Operation.
Acknowledging the concerns amplified through mass and social media, the National Police Commission underscored its dedicated focus on the purpose of the "Yukthiya" operation. Moreover, the Commission disclosed its thorough examination of complaints received, leading to the creation of explicit guidelines aimed at preserving transparency, upholding human rights, and preventing potential abuse of power.
The Commission has specifically directed the Acting IGP to oversee that all activities associated with the "Yukthiya" Operation fall within the existing legal framework of the country. Emphasizing the imperative to conduct operations in strict accordance with the law, the Commission has issued clear instructions to ensure compliance.
Furthermore, the Commission has instructed all officials involved in the operation to prioritize the protection of human rights during the execution of their duties. It has warned of strict disciplinary measures against officers found to have acted against the law, reinforcing the commitment to accountability.
In an additional directive, the National Police Commission has tasked the Acting IGP with the responsibility of effectively communicating these guidelines to all police officials engaged in the "Yukthiya" Operation. This emphasis on communication aims to ensure a collective understanding and adherence to the established standards across all levels of law enforcement involved in the operation.
