Having missed the World Cup due to injury, Hasaranga made a triumphant comeback, claiming a career-best seven-wicket haul in a rain-affected match. The encounter witnessed a remarkable display of cricketing prowess as Sri Lanka dominated proceedings, securing the win with eight wickets to spare.
Zimbabwe, having won the toss and opting to bat, faced a formidable challenge from the rejuvenated Sri Lankan side. Notably, skipper Kusal Mendis presented the cap to debutant Shevon Daniel, who replaced Dasun Shanaka in the lineup. Despite a confident start by Zimbabwe's opening batsmen, rain interrupted play with the score at 40/0 for 7.4 overs. Upon resumption, Hasaranga dismantled the opposition, claiming three quick wickets and restricting Zimbabwe to 48/3 for 11.5 overs.
The match resumed with 27 overs per side, and Hasaranga continued his remarkable spell, finishing with a remarkable 7-wicket haul, conceding just 19 runs. Sri Lanka successfully limited Zimbabwe to 96 runs in 22.5 overs, with contributions from Dilshan Madushanka, Mahesh Theekshana, and Janith Liyanage.
