There has been a substantial decline in crime rates between December 17th of last year and January 3rd of this year. This positive trend is attributed to the ongoing 'Yukthiya' operation aimed at combating toxic drugs and organized crime, Deputy Inspector General of Crimes, Kalinga Jayasinghe, said.

During the mentioned period last year, encompassing the 17th of December to January 3rd, a total of 1477 violent crimes, including murder, rape, housebreaking, and car theft, were reported across the island. However, DIG Jayasinghe highlighted that this figure has decreased to 1313 for the same period this year.

He emphasized the effectiveness of the Yukthiya operation in curbing violent crime and expressed optimism about maintaining this positive trajectory in the ongoing efforts to ensure public safety.
