The Secretary-General of Parliament has officially notified the Election Commission of the vacant seat left by MP Chaminda Wijesiri after his resignation. The Communication Department of Parliament issued a press release confirming that this information was conveyed in writing to the Chairman of the Election Commission.

The announcement came shortly after the commencement of the first parliamentary session of 2024 on January 9. During the session, MP Wijesiri informed the House about his decision to step down as a Member of Parliament. Subsequently, the Communications Department of the Parliament confirmed that Wijesiri submitted his resignation to the Secretary-General of Parliament, Kushani Rohanadeera.

In accordance with Section 64(1) of the Parliamentary Elections Act No. 01 of 1981, the Secretary-General is poised to inform the Chairman of the Election Commission about the vacancy of Wijesiri's parliamentary seat. This formal process follows the established legal framework governing such resignations in the parliamentary context.
