In a concerning development, Sri Lanka has witnessed a rapid spike in Dengue cases, with a staggering 2,316 cases reported in the last seven days alone, averaging around 325 cases per day.
Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, Director of the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), highlighted the resurgence, emphasizing that the nation is once again experiencing an average daily recording of over 250 cases.
Attributing the increase to the ongoing rainy conditions, Dr. Samaraweera urged the public to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings and eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites to mitigate the spread of Dengue.
The Epidemiology Unit reported a total of 88,398 Dengue cases in 2023, with the Colombo District leading with 18,650 cases. The month of December alone witnessed 11,498 cases, marking the highest monthly tally for Dengue cases in 2023. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as efforts intensify to curb the Dengue outbreak.
