The police have identified 1,091 individuals involved in underworld activities across the country, Public Security Minister Tiran Alles said.
Among them, 135 are reportedly continuing their criminal operations even while being incarcerated.
Minister Alles stated that this information has been conveyed to officers in charge of respective police stations. In a significant move, he highlighted that, for the first time in history, a camera system has been installed at the Bandaranaike International Airport to bolster scrutiny of wanted criminals attempting to flee the country.
Collaboratively, the Intelligence Unit and Police Narcotics Bureau have compiled a list of individuals engaged in drug trafficking throughout Sri Lanka. Police Officers in Charge (OICs) are now assigned the task of apprehending these drug traffickers within their designated areas, Minister Alles noted, emphasizing that legal action is being taken against numerous suspects who are currently undergoing interrogation.
Minister Alles disclosed the establishment of community police committees in over 14,000 Grama Niladhari Divisions nationwide. These committees play a crucial role in supporting national security by providing accurate information about residents in each village and monitoring individuals entering specific villages from external sources.
