In the wake of a persistent surge in fever cases at Matara Prison, an additional eight inmates have been rushed to Matara Hospital for medical attention. The situation has intensified, with the total number of hospitalized inmates reaching 16.
According to Gamini Dissanayake, the Prisons spokesman, the escalating health crisis prompted the admission of several inmates to Matara Hospital on Friday. Regrettably, one inmate undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Matara Hospital succumbed to the fever on Friday night.
As of now, two out of the 16 hospitalized inmates are under intensive care in the ICU. Authorities are actively monitoring the situation, and the prison administration is working in collaboration with healthcare professionals to manage and contain the outbreak.
The cause of the fever outbreak is under investigation, and measures are being taken to prevent further spread within the prison facility.
