Bangladesh has contributed essential medicines valued at US$1 million to Sri Lanka. The official handover ceremony took place at the office of Sri Lanka's Health Minister, Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, where Bangladesh High Commissioner Tareq Md Ariful Islam conveyed the donation from the Essential Drugs Company Limited (EDCL), a state-owned pharmaceutical enterprise.
The donation, consisting of twenty-four critical medical items meticulously selected to meet Sri Lanka's specific needs, was warmly received by key officials from the Sri Lankan Health Ministry. Among the dignitaries present were Secretary Health Dr. P. G. Mahipala, Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena, DDG MSD Dr. Dharmaratne, Director (Diplomatic Affairs) Dr. Anver Hamdani, and Director MSD Dr. Dias.
Health Minister Ramesh Pathirana expressed heartfelt gratitude to the government and people of Bangladesh for their compassionate gesture. He applauded the Bangladesh High Commission for playing a pivotal role in enhancing bilateral relations, particularly in the critical domains of health and pharmaceuticals.
High Commissioner Tareq Md Ariful Islam, reciprocating the sentiment, characterized the donation as a tangible manifestation of Bangladesh's dedication and goodwill toward Sri Lanka. He underscored the significant potential for collaboration between the two nations in the pharmaceutical and health sectors.
This recent donation follows Bangladesh's earlier provision of medical supplies worth US$2.3 million in May 2022, marking another chapter in the growing friendship between the two countries. Notably, both governments are actively exploring opportunities for a more robust collaboration in sourcing pharmaceutical products from Bangladesh, further solidifying their partnership in the crucial realm of healthcare.
