The Cinnamon Garden Police have arrested three suspects in connection with a fraud amounting to Rs. 25.5 million.
According to the police, an advertisement was published in a Sunday newspaper, specifying the registration numbers and types of several vehicles and inviting offers for their sale at a rented complex at the BMICH.
As per the advertisement, two buyers visited the BMICH on Wednesday (20) with the intention of purchasing a car and a jeep.
Upon reaching the BMICH, the office manager and the head of the organization contacted the buyers, requesting them to provide money before initiating the necessary documentation for the sale of the respective vehicles.
Consequently, the buyer handed over Rs. 12.5 million, while the other person contributed Rs. 13 million.
Subsequently, the individual who received the money went to a room inside the premises and escaped through the back door, promising to deliver the vehicle keys and documents.
Prompted by a complaint from the two buyers, the police launched an investigation and arrested three individuals: the main manager, assistant manager, and cashier of the company.
The arrested individuals, aged 41, 43, and 65, are identified as residents of Pannipitiya, Maligawatta, and Colombo 15, respectively.
The police stated that a travel ban has been secured for the fugitive main suspect, preventing him from traveling abroad.
Further investigations regarding the incident will be handed over to the Fraud Investigation Bureau and the Criminal Investigation Department.
