In a remarkable display of talent and determination, the Sri Lankan Age Group Swimming Team secured a Bronze Medal on the opening day of the 17th Singapore Open Artistic Swimming Championships held at the prestigious OCBC Aquatic Centre in Singapore.
Leading the charge was Venuki Wijesena, who notched an impressive 62.0060 points in the fiercely contested 13-15 years Youth Figure Competition, securing a well-deserved third place on the podium. In the 11-12 years age group, Kihara Goonetilleke delivered a commendable performance, finishing fifth with a score of 58.3623 points.
The first day of competition also witnessed the participation of other talented swimmers in the 11-12 years age group. Amara Watson Kittle secured the 23rd position with 54.5845 points, while Aheli Joseph claimed the 47th spot with 46.6135 points from a competitive field of 63 participants.
In the 13-15 years Youth category, Ayla Watson Kittle secured the 24th position with 53.8424 points, joined by Satvi Arjuna (33rd place, 51.0000 points), Sanuki Suraweera (35th place, 50.6849 points), and Andrea Thirukumar (36th place, 50.5818 points) among 52 participants.
The Sri Lankan contingent, comprising a total of 17 participants from Aurora Synchro Club, Ladies' College, Musaeus College, and Visakha Vidyalaya, showcased their skills in various age groups. This marks the team's first international Artistic Swimming outing since 2019.
Under the expert supervision of Head Coach Dehara Katipearachchi, a former Asian Games and Commonwealth Games athlete, the team displayed a high level of cohesion and determination. With two more days of competition ahead, the Sri Lankan swimmers are poised to continue their outstanding performance in the face of stiff competition, with over 220 artistic swimmers from diverse countries and clubs across the Asian continent participating in the event.
