The Sri Lanka Navy intercepted and seized two Indian poaching trawlers along with 25 Indian fishermen who were found engaged in illegal fishing off Point Pedro in Sri Lankan waters.
As part of their ongoing efforts to combat illegal fishing practices that adversely affect the livelihoods of local fishermen and marine resources, the Navy remains vigilant with regular patrols and operations in Sri Lankan waters.
The Northern Naval Command, in a coordinated effort, deployed its Fast Attack Craft to disperse a group of Indian poaching trawlers identified during the nighttime operation. Two Indian poaching trawlers, along with 25 fishermen, were subsequently detained and brought to the Kankasanthurai harbour for further legal action.
This latest apprehension brings the total number of Indian poaching trawlers seized by the Sri Lanka Navy in 2023 to 33, with 220 Indian fishermen apprehended. All individuals and vessels captured during these operations are handed over to the relevant authorities for appropriate legal proceedings, the Navy said.
