The Defence Ministry has granted the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) permission to detain underworld figures "Harak Kata" and "Kudu Salindu" for an additional 90 days.
The CID has formally communicated this extension to the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.
This decision comes in the wake of a Court of Appeal directive on December 6, instructing the CID to present "Harak Kata" before an appropriate Magistrate’s Court if the available evidence is deemed insufficient to justify continued custody under detention orders.
The notorious duo, Nadun Chinthaka Wickremeratne, known as "Harak Kata," and his infamous accomplice Salindu Malshika, alias "Kudu Salindu," were apprehended in Madagascar on March 1, following a joint operation by INTERPOL, Malagasy law enforcement authorities, and Customs officials.
After being extradited to Sri Lanka on March 15, pursuant to information provided by Malagasy defence officials to the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry, the Defence Ministry initially issued a 90-day detention order under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
"Harak Kata," known for operating drug syndicates across Dubai, Malaysia, Singapore, Seychelles, the Maldives, and Madagascar, faces charges related to multiple murders, robberies, and transnational narcotics trafficking. On the other hand, "Kudu Salindu" stands accused of orchestrating a minimum of 09 murders and fatally injuring four others.
While in CID custody, "Harak Kata" attempted a daring escape in September at the CID premises, which was thwarted by vigilant officials. A cash reward of Rs. 2.5 million has been offered for information leading to the apprehension of the constable who aided in the escape, who is currently at large.
The investigation into "Harak Kata's" escape bid has resulted in the arrest of the constable's mother, brother-in-law, another police officer, and a former sniper from the Sri Lanka Army.
