Due to escalating economic challenges in Sri Lanka, a growing number of former military officers are reportedly enlisting in the International Legion of Territorial Defence of Ukraine, commonly known as the Ukrainian Foreign Legion. Sources said that nearly 70 legally discharged Sri Lankan military personnel have expressed interest in joining, enticed by monthly salaries ranging from 1 million to 12 million rupees.

According to a former Sri Lankan military official based in Ukraine, these individuals have already traveled to Azerbaijan, Dubai, and India to join a special unit led by Captain Ranish Hewage. Presently, they await further deployment to Ukraine, with Poland being the designated entry point, as confirmed by the official.

The economic hardships in Sri Lanka are cited as the primary motivator for this surge in enlistment, with former officers and other ranks seeking financial stability abroad. Reports suggest that more than 20 former Sri Lankan military personnel are currently serving in the Ukrainian Foreign Legion.
