In a fiery exchange within the hallowed halls of Parliament today, the Minister of Justice, Wijeyadasa Rajapaksha, and Member of Parliament, Rishad Bathiudeen, engaged in a heated argument centered around remarks made by both parties regarding a judge on a previous occasion.
MP Bathiudeen took the floor, addressing a comment made by Minister Rajapaksha alleging that he had insulted a specific judge. Bathiudeen vehemently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he had not uttered the name of any judge in question during his previous statements.
“Minister Rajapaksha said I cursed a certain judge the other day. I must say I never cursed anyone, and besides, I did not mention any name of a judge. Also, the Minister never objected to former Minister Roshan Ranasinghe when he made a remark against a judge,” MP Bathiudeen retorted.
Minister Rajapaksha promptly responded, insisting that MP Bathiudeen had indeed referred to a particular judge when he used the term ‘a Muslim judge.’
"Also, I must remind the MP that the whole Parliament criticized Minister Ranasinghe during the debate on the motion that was brought to sack officials of Sri Lanka Cricket,” Minister Rajapaksha added, attempting to draw parallels to a previous incident involving another parliamentarian.
The exchange between the two officials highlighted the ongoing tensions and differences of opinion within the legislative body, further emphasizing the challenges faced in maintaining decorum and respectful discourse. As the verbal sparring continued, observers noted the need for a measured and impartial approach to address such disputes within the parliamentary setting.
