The Central Mail Exchange (CME), the Sri Lanka Customs seized multiple consignments containing psychedelic drugs with an estimated value exceeding Rs. 43 million. The contraband, originating from Germany and the United Kingdom, was addressed to fictitious recipients in various locations across Sri Lanka.
The Customs Narcotics Control Unit, during a special surveillance operation within the CME over the weekend, identified and inspected 25 parcels. The parcels were found to contain a range of narcotics, including 1.74 kilograms of the Cannabis variety 'Kush,' 2,193 tablets of Ecstasy containing Methamphetamine, and 29 grams of Amphetamine.
Senior Director and Customs Spokesman Seevali Arukgoda said that the parcels were purportedly destined for addresses in Colombo, Battaramulla, Maharagama, Boralesgamuwa, Panadura, Moratuwa, and Kandy. However, investigations revealed that all provided addresses were fraudulent.
Following the discovery, Customs officials collaborated with the CME's Postal Department to conduct further inquiries. The confiscated narcotics will be handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) for legal action.
