The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) achieved a significant milestone today as it formally received two Harbin Y-12-IV aircraft from China, marking a crucial advancement in the nation's aviation capabilities.
In 2017, the SLAF commenced preparations for the acquisition of two state-of-the-art Y-12IV aircraft, culminating in the signing of a contract on December 16, 2019, between the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence on behalf of the Sri Lankan Government and the China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation.
The Y-12IV aircraft, recognized for its Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) capabilities, represents a versatile light transport aircraft. This upgraded model, featuring extended wing tips and an increased take-off weight, significantly enhances performance capabilities.
Apart from meeting operational and search and rescue requirements, the Air Force Commander underscored the unique capability of these aircraft to support tourism promotion. With a passenger capacity of 15 individuals, the Y-12IVs can accommodate a diverse range of needs. Notably, their ability to land on 90% of Sri Lanka's runways positions them as ideal assets for promoting tourism in remote and picturesque locations.
The induction ceremony, held at the Ratmalana SLAF Base, was attended by key dignitaries including State Minister of Defence Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon, Security Advisor to the President Sagala Ratnayaka, Defence Secretary Kamal Gunaratna, Chief of Defence Staff Shavendra Silva, Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, and several other officials.
The reception of these Y-12IV aircraft signifies a substantial enhancement in SLAF's capabilities, not only bolstering national defense but also opening avenues for leveraging aviation assets in diverse operational and promotional contexts.
