Sports Minister Harin Fernando has ousted former World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga from the role of National Sports Council Chairman. In his place, a new 15-member Council has been appointed, with Dr. Maiya Gunasekera at the helm. I U Wickramasuriya has been designated as the council's secretary.
Other council members include former athlete Sriyani Kulawansa, Major General Rajitha Ampemohotti, Professor Arjuna de Silva, Pandukka Keerithinanda, Ana Punchihewa, Malik Kader, Dr. S. V. D. Nananayakkara, former ruggerite Hafeez Marso, former Sri Lankan cricketer Sidath Wettamuni, General Jagath Jayasooriya, Ms. Anuruddha Illeperuma, Prof. Shemal Fernando, and former cricket commentator Kamal Deshapriya.
Additionally, the National Sports Selection Committee, now under the leadership of General Shvendra Silva, features Arjun Silva as the Secretary. Other committee members include Dr. Maiya Gunasekera, Suresh Subramanium, and Nalinda Sampath Illankakoon.
