Colombo (ZiraDaily) - During a recent meeting of the Sectoral Oversight Committee (SOC) on National Economic and Physical Plans, officials from the Excise Department shared positive news regarding their efforts to combat fake stickers on liquor bottles.
The department reported a significant increase in monthly revenue, amounting to Rs. 1 billion, as a result of successful raids.
Chaired by MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage, the SOC summoned representatives from the Excise Department, Inland Revenue Department, and Sri Lanka Customs to discuss matters outlined in a report submitted to the President by the parliamentary committee. One of the main topics of inquiry was the amendment of the Excise Ordinance Act.
The SOC emphasized the importance of maintaining the increased revenue achieved by the Excise Department and suggested that ongoing random raids would further discourage the use of fake stickers on liquor bottles. Additionally, the SOC addressed the functioning of the RAMIS system, directing questions to the Inland Revenue Department.
The committee examined the current status of linking this data system with other government institutions. Officials present at the meeting assured that the system would be fully operational by January 2024, with efforts made to address any existing deficiencies.
The Inland Revenue Department also mentioned that the number of tax files currently stands at approximately 700,000 and is expected to reach 1 million in the future
