In a concerning development, the Leprosy Control Unit of Sri Lanka has reported the identification of nearly 1,300 leprosy patients across the country since the beginning of the year.
As of October, 1,256 cases have been documented, with the highest concentration reported in Colombo, totaling 256 patients.
Additional districts grappling with a notable number of cases include Gampaha, with 138 patients, Batticaloa with 130, and Kalutara with 92 identified cases. Among the diagnosed patients, 131 are children under the age of 14, highlighting the need for heightened awareness and proactive measures to address this health issue.
Dr. Prasad Ranaweera, the director of the Leprosy Control Unit, emphasizes the urgency of public health initiatives to curb the spread of leprosy and provide appropriate care to those affected.
