A minor employee of Sevanagala Rural Hospital has been sentenced to 20 years in prison, serving two counts concurrently over ten years, by Embilipitiya High Court Judge Buddhika Ragala.
Nammuni Arachchige Nimal Ranjith, an attendant at the hospital, was found guilty of attempted murder for poisoning the water tank in the Chief Medical Officer's official residence on February 3, 2023. The act targeted the doctor, his wife, and two children.
Sewanagala Police initially arrested two suspects, including another doctor from the hospital. However, the latter was acquitted when the Attorney General withdrew charges against him, and the case proceeded against the attendant.
Government Analyst K.A.P. B. Perera and Senior Prof. in Forensic Medicine of Colombo University Ravindra Fernando conducted tests on water samples, providing crucial evidence in the case.
In delivering the sentence, the High Court Judge emphasized that the charges against the accused were proven beyond a reasonable doubt, resulting in a conviction.
