The Irrigation Department in Sri Lanka has issued an "Amber" colour flood warning for some of the low-lying areas in the Nilwala River valley. 

The warning includes Kotapola, Pitabeddara, Akuressa, Pasgoda, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Thihagoda, Matara, and Devinuwara divisional secretariat divisions. 

The warning is valid until 8.00 a.m. tomorrow (24).

According to the flood warning message, there has been considerable rainfall in some of the upstream and middle reach catchment areas of the Nilwala River Basin, as observed around 2.00 a.m. today (23). 

By analyzing the current rainfall situation and river water levels of hydrological stations in Nilwala River, it has been warned that low-lying areas of Nilwala River valley are at risk of flooding.

Residents in the affected areas and motorists traveling through those areas are requested to pay close attention to this situation. Authorities advise making necessary arrangements to stay safe, including moving to higher ground if necessary.
