Deshmanya Deshabandu Lalith Kotelawala, the founding chairman of Seylan Bank and former chairman of Ceylinco Consolidated, has passed away at the age of 84, as confirmed by family sources.

They said that he breathed his last while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Colombo this morning.

Taking over Ceylinco Consolidated from his father in the 1960s, Kotelawala expanded the group into new fields including banking, non-banking finance, investment banking, housing and property development, travel and leisure, communication & information technology, education and healthcare and, more recently, microfinance.
