Sri Lanka sees uptick in dengue cases
Due to the ongoing rainy weather, Sri Lanka is experiencing a rise in dengue cases compared to the previous month.
According to the Epidemiology Unit, the number of reported dengue cases for the year 2023 has exceeded 66,000.
As of October 18, there have been 66,368 cases reported, with the highest number coming from the Colombo district, totaling 13,900.
The Western Province has recorded the highest number of cases, surpassing 31,900. In October alone, there have been 1,885 new cases of dengue reported.
Besides, one more death related to dengue has been recorded, bringing the total number of fatalities in 2023 to 39.
Dr. Nalin Ariyadasa, Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, highlighted the impact of the rainy weather on the Western Province. All three districts within the province have reported dengue cases, with high-risk zones identified in Gampaha, Attanagalle, Dompe, the entire Colombo municipal zone, Maharagama, Gothatuwa, Panadura, and Beruwela.
The National Dengue Control Unit has identified eight locations in the Western Province as "high risk zones" due to the significant number of dengue cases reported there.
