Three individuals wanted for breaking into an automated teller machine (ATM) in Madurankuliya and making off with over Rs. 10 million in cash have been arrested.
The investigation was launched after Madurankuliya Police and the Puttalam Crimes Division received reports of an ATM robbery at the 10th Mile Post area in Madurankuliya on October 8.
The thieves stole a total of Rs. 10,549,000 from the ATM, which belonged to a private bank.
Based on the information gathered during the investigation, the police managed to arrest three individuals suspected to be involved in the ATM robbery. The arrests took place during the early hours of Tuesday, October 17.
At the time of their apprehension, the police discovered more than Rs. 9.27 million in cash in the possession of the suspects. Additionally, they seized a safety helmet and a can of spray paint believed to have been used to disable the surveillance camera during the robbery.
The arrested individuals, aged 32 and 35, hail from the Galgamuwa, Werellagama, and Anuradhapura areas. Two of them worked as ATM escort security guards, while the third was employed as a motor mechanic.
The suspects have been handed over to the Madurankuliya Police for further investigation.
