Sri Lanka is taking steps to facilitate voting for disabled individuals by introducing special identification cards, according to Chairman of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Open and Responsible Government, Jagath Kumara Sumithraarachchi.
Recognizing the challenges faced by disabled citizens during elections, the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) legislator announced plans to issue these cards, making it easier for them to exercise their right to vote.
In addition to this initiative, the committee aims to enhance public institutions and provide user-friendly guidelines for them. Input from the public, government officials, and scholars will be sought to develop these guidelines.
The committee's overall objective is to strengthen democracy, improve accountability of government institutions, and enhance their responsiveness to the needs of the people.
Sumithraarachchi stressed the importance of integrity, strategic planning, and the cooperation of media organizations in the country's development.
