The Department of Meteorology has issued an ‘Amber’ level advisory for severe lightning in certain areas of the island.
The advisory warns that thundershowers accompanied by intense lightning are expected to occur in the Northern, North-central, and Eastern provinces, as well as in the Kandy and Matale districts during the evening or night.
The Met. Department has also cautioned that there may be temporary localized strong winds during these thundershowers. As a result, the general public is strongly urged to take adequate precautions to minimize any potential damages caused by the lightning activity.
In addition to seeking shelter, preferably indoors, the Department of Meteorology advises people to avoid taking cover under trees and to stay away from open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations, and open water bodies during thunderstorms.
It is also recommended to refrain from using wired telephones and connected electric appliances when lightning is present. Open vehicles, including bicycles, tractors, and boats, should be avoided as well.
Residents are also reminded to be cautious of fallen trees and power lines, as they may pose a significant danger during thunderstorms.
