Sri Lanka Customs made a significant seizure of illegal drugs with a street value of over Rs.122 million.
The drugs, including a cannabis variety known as 'Kush' and methamphetamine, were found hidden in three unaccompanied personal baggage (UPB) packages that were sent from Canada.
The search took place at a private freight forwarding company warehouse in Peliyagoda.
Customs officials, who were stationed at the Midco cargo warehouse, became suspicious of three tea chests that were being sent to a consignee in Colombo. Upon inspection, they discovered a false bottom in the chests, where they found 16 kilograms of Kush and one kilogram of methamphetamine, commonly referred to as 'Ice'.
The UPBs were initially believed to contain canned food, dry rations, clothes, and personal belongings. However, the discovery of the concealed narcotics led to further investigations by the Police Narcotic Bureau.
The seized drugs have been handed over to the Police Narcotic Bureau for further examination, and they are currently investigating to identify the local recipient of the illegal substances.
This operation highlights the ongoing efforts of Sri Lanka Customs in combating the illegal drug trade and ensuring the safety and security of the country.
