In a recent news briefing held in Colombo, Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella revealed a startling increase in hospital admissions in leading government hospitals. According to the Minister, admissions have surged by 25% over the past nine months.
Notably, the Minister also highlighted a significant rise in the number of patients seeking treatment at the Outpatient Department (OPD). This surge amounted to a staggering 42% increase during the same time period.
When asked about the cause of this sudden surge, Minister Rambukwella attributed it to a decline in patients' interest in seeking treatment at private hospitals. This shift in preference has led to a higher demand for services at government hospitals.
In a related announcement, the Health Ministry has decided to suspend emergency purchases of medicines. Minister Rambukwella explained that this decision was made due to various challenges and misconceptions surrounding the emergency purchase procedure.
"The suspension of emergency purchases is a temporary measure, aimed at addressing the issues we have encountered," Minister Rambukwella emphasized. However, he also clarified that the process will be re-implemented in the event of any emergencies, such as another pandemic.
The increase in hospital admissions and the temporary suspension of emergency purchases highlight the ongoing challenges faced by the healthcare system in the country. The Health Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary steps to ensure the provision of quality healthcare services to all citizens.
