Health authorities have recently reported a concerning increase in the use of heroin among school children, particularly those aged between 15 and 18.

Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. Gihan Abeywardena expressed his dismay at the fact that young students have become victims of heroin and other illicit substances.

Dr. Abeywardena highlighted the dangerous nature of heroin addiction, noting that users often have a high likelihood of transitioning to other illicit drugs, which further exacerbates their situation. Abrupt cessation of heroin use can also lead to physical dependence, resulting in withdrawal symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting.

Furthermore, heroin overdose can have severe consequences, as it depresses breathing and can potentially be fatal. This distressing trend has already had an impact, with an increasing number of school and university students being admitted to hospitals due to convulsions or fits directly linked to excessive heroin use.

Dr. Abeywardena emphasized the crucial role that parents play in addressing this issue, urging them to remain vigilant and closely monitor their children's activities. Early detection and intervention are essential in preventing the escalation of drug abuse among school children, he stressed.
