SL workers departures to South Korea exceed 5,000 in 2023

The number of Sri Lankan workers departing for South Korea this year has exceeded 5,000, representing a 44 percent growth compared to the previous year.Minister of Labor and Foreign Employment, Manusha Nanayakkara said.

He said this figure underscores the country's commitment to enhancing employment opportunities.

In a meeting with Nanayakkara in April, the director of the South Korean human resources department based in Sri Lanka agreed to provide 8,000 job opportunities for Sri Lankans in South Korea this year, surpassing the earlier job quota of 6,500, as reported by local media.

Furthermore, this year, Sri Lankan workers' remittances in August exceeded 499 million U.S. dollars, with the cumulative total for the January-August period reaching approximately 3.9 billion dollars. This represents a significant 74.4 percent increase compared to the same period in 2022, according to official data.
