Former President of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL), Jaswar Umar, secured his re-election to the prestigious position in a recent vote held on Friday, September 29.
Umar garnered a significant 45 votes, a commanding lead over his closest competitor, Thilanga Dakshitha, who received a total of 20 votes.
The election took place at 03:00 p.m. on the same day at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute’s Auditorium, conducted under the watchful eyes of both the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
A suspension that had been in effect since January 2023, as a result of the FIFA Council's decision, was lifted on August 28, allowing FFSL to regain its membership rights, as defined in Article 13 of the FIFA Statutes.
On December 25, 2022, FIFA had issued a red notice to Sri Lankan Football authorities, expressing concerns about the Electoral roadmap of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka.
To oversee the FFSL elections, a three-member committee was appointed by Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Roshan Ranasinghe, on July 25.
