In an address at the UN General Assembly, President Joe Biden issued a stark warning against the allowance of Russia’s aggressive behavior against Ukraine without consequences.
He placed the responsibility for the ongoing war in Ukraine solely on Russia. Biden emphasized that Russia alone possesses the power to end the conflict instantaneously.
Biden also reiterated the U.S.’s backing for Ukraine in their effort to bring about a diplomatic resolution to a just and lasting peace. The president stressed that any compromise on the fundamental principles of the United States at an aggressor’s behest would leave other states vulnerable. His remarks underscored the international community’s role in upholding these principles and protecting global peace.
In a first, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy will address the general assembly in person, raising anticipation for potential geopolitical drama. Zelenskiy will also speak at a security council meeting on the war in Ukraine, which Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is expected to attend. While Zelenskiy’s decision to attend the general assembly in person is seen as a gamble, it is a significant step in Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty.
Contrary to reports, the Council on Foreign Relations thinktank in New York has not cancelled a meeting for Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi, who is seen by some as a human rights abuser. The event has simply been postponed until Wednesday at the request of the Iranians and has been moved to a different location. The move indicates the ongoing complex diplomatic relations between the United States and Iran.
Other significant points raised during the UN General Assembly include Turkey’s leader, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, pledging to increase efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine through diplomacy and dialogue. Furthermore, President Biden accused Russia of shredding longstanding arms control agreements but vowed that the U.S. would lead by example in limiting the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
Meanwhile, Poland’s president, Andrzej Duda, called for an end to the brutal war in Ukraine. In response to a military operation launch in Nagorno Karabakh by Azerbaijan, France called for an emergency meeting of the UN security council. Biden also pledged to responsibly manage competition with China to prevent escalation into conflict, emphasizing the balance between competition and cooperation on the global stage.
